Some initial questions and answers

Brandenburger & Davis has been in business since 1932 and over the years we have successfully worked on thousands and thousands of cases. While every case and each genealogy is different, many of the questions initially asked by our heirs are very similar.

Why am I being contacted by Brandenburger & Davis?
We have learned about an estate or assets that have either missing or unknown beneficiaries or heirs. We work on matters from all over the world and obtain our cases in many various ways.

How did you find me?
We are private investigators, historians, and genealogists. We use all types of research methods, records, and resources to determine who you are and your potential involvement in the decedent’s estate.

Is this some type of scam?
This is sadly a very common question in this day and age. Brandenburger & Davis has been successfully and legally engaged in probate research and the location of missing or unknown heirs continuously since 1932. Our firm is in good standing around the country and protecting your identity and confidentiality is as important to our reputation as it is to you.

How much will this cost me?
In an age where there is never something for nothing, your involvement in this matter should not have any out-of-pocket expenses to you. We like to consider this arrangement one where the outcome can only result to your financial advantage.

When am I getting my inheritance?
We do not control the timing of the process. We do not get paid for our service to you until you receive your inheritance. As such, our primary goal is to do the best job possible, as quickly as possible. Our current average suggests that the process typically takes around two years from start to finish. Unfortunately, some jurisdictions can take much longer.

How much money am I going to get?
Every state and foreign country has a provision outlining descent and distribution. These laws vary greatly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Until the heirship is decided, it is virtually impossible to accurately calculate your exact fractional interest.

What about taxes, estate debt, and a list of all of the assets?
Many of these questions cannot be adequately answered at this point in the process. Any taxes and debts owed by the estate are paid before any inheritance is distributed to the heirs. The decedent’s debts are not the responsibility of the heirs. If an estate were to become insolvent, or without value, the heirs do not inherit. You are not responsible for any costs to Brandenburger & Davis.

What if I choose to do nothing?
It is possible that without a successful claim, your potential share could be simply ignored by the estate or, in some cases, turned over to the local authorities.
